Celarain Lighthouse (formerly Punta Sur Park) is the largest ecological reserve in Cozumel, located at the southern tip of the island. Discover the best beach. Take pictures of exotic birds, crocodiles and more. Visit the Museum of Navigation, go up the lighthouse or enjoy a catamaran ride across the lagoon.
This ecological park and nature reserve is a breathtaking environment of mangrove jungles, white sand beaches and reef formations at the south end of the island. The park extends over more than 247 acres of land and harbor a variety of wildlife, including crocodiles which you can watch from a safe distance in a look-out tower. You can also see 220 species of birds, iguanas and giant turtles, which come to shore between June and August to lay their eggs. Among the park's most interesting structures is an old lighthouse and navigation museum displaying the evolution of seamanship and navigation from the time of the Maya to modern times. Here, visitors can also learn about life in Cozumel during the first part of the 20th century through photos and other articles belonging to several generations of lighthouse keepers and their families. Near the lighthouse, El Caracol is a well-preserved ancient structure, used by the Mayans to signal the approach of a hurricane.

The Museum of the Island of Cozumel brings both visitors and local residents a clearer understanding of the island's natural environments, exciting history and culture. An incredible collection of murals that depict daily scenes of Mayan life and photographs of the islands early residents line the walls of the museum. Four exhibit halls, sculptures, charts, traveling exhibits, special programs and interactive demonstrations, complete with guides who speak English, Spanish and Mayan, bring the museum to life.
Cozumel's museum is conveniently located in the heart of downtown along the main street of Avenue Rafael E. Melgar.
Within the museum visitors can learn about the island's origins, wildlife migration patterns, reefs, archaeology, galleons and pirates through daily guided tours or on an individual basis. The north lighthouse is not really one or our Cozumel "beaches" as much as it is an adventure. If you have a four-wheel drive at your disposal and you want to really do something different, just pack up your eating and drinking supplies and head north until you can't drive anymore! The adventure is well worth the effort. Chances are you will be the only people around if you do get a chance to see it! This is a definite adventure in Cozume.
A Mayan site on the eastern coast, near the northern tip of the island, the castillo (castle) comprises of a lookout tower, the base of a pyramid, and a temple with two chambers capped by a false arch. The waters here harbor several shipwrecks and it's a fine spot for snorkeling because there are few visitors to disturb the fish.
There is beautiful coastal scenery leading to La Palma, an 800-year old Mayan ruin and Castillo Real, an inspiring 1,200-year-old ruin overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
El Caracol is a well-preserved ancient structure built between 1200 and 1400 AD and used by the Mayans to signal the approach of hurricane. In essence, El Caracol is a whistle propelled by winds funneled through a seashell to warn navigators to take refuge from impending bad weather.
The ruins are now part of the Parque Punta Sur Ecological reserve. The USD $10 entrance fee includes a guided tour of the ruin.
Located off of Cozumel's main island road about 10 miles south of downtown, the Mayan Site of El Cedral is known as the location discovered by Spanish explorers on May 3, 1518, and the site of the celebration of La Santa Cruz, the Holy Cross, each May.
El Cedral, now a quaint village, was once a place to worship idols and make offerings to the gods. Visitors are invited to explore the archaeological site of El Cedral, nestled among Cozumel's lush jungles, and can see the area by guided tour. Tours are available via horseback or a four-wheel drive vehicle. By venturing to El Cedral, travelers will experience a piece of ancient history as they go through the church's remaining structure and intricate arch. Inside the ancient structure, paint and stucco that were used by the Mayan to adorn the walls are still visible.
Take the main highway south to Km 17.5. T0here is a large arched entry, take a left, then drive 3 Km (2 miles) inland to the site.

San Gervasio, the largest and most important archaeological site on the island of Cozumel, features centuries-old structures that depict the ancient Mayan civilization and serve as a sanctuary of the Goddess of Fertility, X'chel. Visitors exploring the pre-Hispanic settlement of San Gervasio can wander through four distinct historical districts, the first dating from the Early Classical Period (AD 300 – 600) and the last from the Late Post-Classical Period (AD 1250-1500).
